Paul Krugman had an interesting blog in the NY Times today entitled “Nobody Understands Debt.” That is, except Paul Krugman.

His argument is the same old Keynesian one. NOW is the time to ramp up government spending and debt. Professor Krugman forgets the second part of Keynes – governments are supposed to cut spending and pay down government debt when the economy improves. This is something that has NEVER been done in the U.S. That is why I call Krugman and his brethren the 50% Keynesians. They never want to cut government spending or pay down the debt.

Some will claim that President Clinton paid down the Federal debt. That is a false and misleading statement.
In the following chart, you can see the reduction in Federal debt (blue line) during the late 1990s. However, that was a decline in ON BALANCE SHEET DEBT. If you look at the red line, OFF BALANCE SHEET DEBT (Agency and Government Sponsored Enterprise debt), you can see that it accelerated at the same time Federal debt was paid down. The total debt kept rising (green line). It was just an accounting trick, not a genuine pay down of debt.

Krugman’s argument rests with “But where’s the inflation?” if too much deficit spending and debt is a problem. Again, that is a misleading argument. True, The Fed’s measure of inflation is low (another Keynesian, Brad DeLong, claims inflation is too low). But that is because all those reserves crammed in the banks haven’t been unleashed … yet.

Beginning in late 2008, Excess Reserves of Depository Institutions exploded upwards (giving depository institution the funds to lend).

Banks have increased lending, but not to the point where it is causing inflation.

And M2 Money Velocity, a measure of Fed policy effectiveness, has crashed.

Will more government spending on high-speed rail, solar panels (like Solyndra) and electric car batteries help revive the economy? Paul Krugman thinks so. Remember, he jokingly said that an alien attack would prompt more government spending and revive the economy. I am beginning to think that he wasn’t kidding.

I of course cannot support the US invasion of Afghanistan. The biggest reason I withhold this endorsement is due to legality. The constitution spells out very clearly what the rules for war are, and these rules were ignored by the government - as has been the case for each US deployment since 1941.

Let the record show: during the entire Obama presidency, Warmowski has never once clarified whether, in his opinion, the Afghanistan war remains an illegal war. How could he? How can an illegal war become legal after a change in the presidency?

What I'm trying to get across here is this: it is not all that important who is in the White House. The United States empire does not make policy in four year segments, stopping and starting with changes in the Presidency.

Afghanistan is a priority, for reasons besides the drugs and the oil pipeline: you can't sell the bullshit 9/11 myth if you ignore Afghanistan.

Most of what you see the US doing around the world, militarily and economically, is part of multiple trends that have been evolving since the end of WWII. The Cold War was fought for 40 years across many presidencies. The wars in the Middle East and Central Asia are part of geopolitical maneuvering that goes back many decades.

The US behaves like a corporation. Ford makes Fords, no matter who the CEO is. The US makes wars, no matter who is President. We have a war and oil based economy. We have to make wars.

Afghanistan may have appeared to be of a lower priority under Bush, but that is because, according to the grand scheme of the elites that own the US, it was important to emphasize Iraq first. Bush was used by the elites to sell Iraq. Obama will be used by the elites to sell Afghanistan and possibly Pakistan and Iran. They've got some big plans that have been going on for years and years and years, and are plotted out for years into the future. Rest assured, the elites have a schedule. It is not useful to see Afghanistan as part of 'Bush policy' or as part of Obama policy. Afghanistan is part of elite policy. Everything you see happening in that region was planned out back before Zbigniew Brzezinski even recruited Barack Obama out of Columbia into the CFR/CIA/Foundation grooming program.

Gasoline deliveries reflect recession and growth. The recent drop in retail gasoline deliveries is signalling a sharp contraction ahead.
Mish recently posted some intriguing charts depicting a significant decline in gasoline consumption. Then correspondent Joe R. forwarded me this stunning chart of gasoline retail deliveries, from the U.S. Energy Information Administration: (EIA)

As Joe noted, this data is interesting because it is un-manipulated, that is, it is not "seasonally adjusted" or run through some black-box modifications like so much other government data.
Retail gasoline deliveries, already well below 1980 levels, have absolutely fallen off a cliff. Is the plunge inventory-related, i.e. are storage facilities so full that retailers are simply putting off deliveries?
Though I don't have data on hand to support this, I know from one of my correspondents who is in the gasoline distribution/delivery business that gasoline is very much a "just in time" commodity: gas stations are often close to running out of fuel when they get a delivery. Stations aren't holding huge quantities of surplus gasoline; that's not how the business works.
Given the absence of "extra storage" in gas stations (and the fact that the number of gas stations has fallen dramatically since 1980), it is reasonable to conclude that retail delivery is largely a function of demand, i.e. gasoline consumption.
Even if you dismiss the recent plunge as an outlier, the declines in retail gasoline deliveries are mind-boggling. If you look at the data from 1983 to 2011 on the link above, you will note that delivery declines align with recessions.
For example, deliveries jumped from 50.1 million gallons per day (MGD) in November 1983, when the nation was emerging from the deepest postwar recession then on record, to 58 MGD the following November (1984).
Deliveries steadily rose to a peak of 67.1 MGD in July 1998, declined marginally in the 2001-2 recession and then surged to 66.8 MGD in August 2003. If we just look at one month--say November--then we see that deliveries remained in a remarkably consistent channel from 1994 to 2008, between 54 MGD and 63 MGD, with the higher numbers occuring in the "peak bubble years" of 1998 and 2003.
In 2010, gasoline deliveries declined to the low 40s--literally falling off the charts. In November 1983, deliveries were 51.1 MGD; in November 2010, they were 42.8 MGD, and in November 2011 they were 30.9 MGD.
Does this reflect higher fuel efficiencies in the U.S. vehicle fleet? To examine fuel efficiency and other macro-trends, I assembled some charts of fuel efficiency (courtesy of the Early Warning blog) and a graph of employment, a commonly used proxy for economic activity/growth.
Let's start with some basic data about population and vehicles. There are 254 million passenger vehicles registered in the U.S. Some percentage of these are classic cars and other vehicles that aren't driven much, but nonetheless the number of vehicles that are in regular use is large.
U.S. population in 1983 was approximately 234 million. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the current population at 313 million.
Vehicle sales declined from a record 17.4 million in 2000 to 11.5 million in 2010.
People are driving less: The Road... Less Traveled: An Analysis of Vehicle Miles Traveled Trends in the U.S.. (2008)
Driving, as measured by national Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT), began to plateau as far back as 2004 and dropped in 2007 for the first time since 1980. Per capita driving followed a similar pattern, with flat-lining growth after 2000 and falling rates since 2005. These recent declines in driving predated the steady hikes in gas prices during 2007 and 2008. Moreover, the recent drops in VMT (90 billion miles) and VMT per capita (388 miles) are the largest annualized drops since World War II.
Here are two charts of U.S. employment which show two periods of strong expansion: in the late 1990s and in 2002-08.

If the number of jobs were correlated to gasoline deliveries, then we would expect deliveries to be close to those registered in 2003 and 1999, since the number of jobs has declined to the levels of those years.
Instead, we find deliveries are dramatically lower:
November 1999: 59 MGD
November 2003: 63.8 MGD
November 2010: 42.8 MGD
Once again, this is not an outlier: deliveries for all of 2010 were between 42 and 46 MGD, compared to deliveries in the high 50s/mid 60s in 1999 and 2003.
There are all kinds of other things that influence the number of miles driven, but there is little evidence that any one factor can account for a 47% drop in retail gasoline deliveries. For example, it is well-known that the U.S. economy has shifted to a digital, service economy in the past 30 years, and since more people can "consume" (via shopping at amazon.com, etc.) and "produce" (work from home) without driving, then it makes sense that people are driving less.
But if we examine the data, it's difficult to attribute the massive recent drops to people ordering stuff online or working from home more. After all, people were working from home and ordering stuff online in 2003, when gas deliveries reached 63 MGD, and in November 2006, when deliveries were 58.8 MGD.
Deliveries in November 2011 were 30.9 MGD, a staggering 47% decline.
What about fuel efficiency? here are two charts from the Early Warning blog. They show a significant increase in the 1980s, but only modest improvement through the 1990s and 2000s.
If we use the same year as in the employment analysis, 1999, we see there was a 6% rise in efficiency from 1999 to 2010. This would suggest 6% of the decline in gasoline deliveries can be attributed to increased efficiency. But what about the other 40% of the decline? That cannot be attributed to higher efficiency.

I've marked up the first chart to show the secular trends in efficiency and employment.

There are no data-supported broad-based drivers for dramatically lower gasoline consumption other than austerity and lower economic activity. The code-word for "austerity and lower economic activity" that is verboten in the Mainstream Media is "recession." Indeed, if you examine the EIA data, the only causal factor that has backing in the data is recession--or if you prefer, austerity and lower economic activity.
Then there is the price of fuel. People have to go to work, pick up the kids, get their meds, etc., and few urban centers in the U.S. have mass transit systems that are up to the task of replacing autos. So most Americans have what we might call non-discretionary driving. But as the price of fuel rises, people find ways to lower their discretionary driving by combining trips, shopping less often, shortening or eliminating vacations, etc. Enterprises reduce costly business travel with teleconferences and other digital technologies.
Data supports the notion that high oil prices lead to recession. For example, Chris Martenson recently made a compelling case for this in Why Our Currency Will Fail ("Note that all of the six prior recessions were preceded by a spike in oil prices.")
Household income doesn't rise just because oil is climbing in cost, and so the extra money spent on fuel is diverted from other consumption or saving (capital accumulation). Higher fuel costs lower household capital formation and reduce consumption/economic activity.
Oil has been elevated for months, kissing $100 and rarely dipping below $90/barrel. Do higher oil costs explain the decline in gasoline consumption? Once again, they undoubtedly influence consumption, but that cannot explain the 40% drop in consumption. After all, when oil spiked in 2008 to $140/barrel, deliveries only dropped by a few million gallons: from 58.8 MGD in July 2007, before the spike, to 54.8 MGD at the point of maximum pain in July 2008.
The cost of oil has declined sharply from mid-2008, yet consumption has tanked from 54.8 MGD in July 2008 to 42.4 MGD in July 2011. That's a hefty 21% decline.
What other plausible explanation is there for the decline from 42.4 MGD in July 2011 to 30.9 MGD in November 2011 other than a dramatic decline in discretionary driving? That 27% drop in a few months in unprecedented, except in times of war or sharp economic contraction, i.e. recession.
If we stipulate that vehicles and fuel consumption are essential proxies for the U.S. economy, then we can expect a steep decline in economic activity to register in other metrics within the next few months.
Such a sharp drop would of course be "unexpected" given the positive employment data of the past few months. But as the data above shows, employment isn't tightly correlated to gasoline consumption: gasoline consumption reflects recession and growth.
In other words, look out below.

Comparing January 2012 to December 2011 is useless, for the reason explained below:

The December to January unemployment statistics are often reported wrong in the press. We're sorry, god love ya, but these articles are plain incorrect. People like to compare the month to month change in population, the number of people no longer considered part of the labor force and other data. The grave mistake made by so many in the press and elsewhere is not realizing annual population adjustments are placed in the January data, not distributed evenly across the entire year, or backwards applied and that's why one cannot compare these two months. Below is a graph of non-institutional population monthly change. This is the number from where all other unemployment statistics are derived. It represents people 16 and older, not locked up somewhere, in a medical facility or in the military.

See those huge three spikes in the above graph? That's when the latest Census, taken every 10 years, has been incorporated into the data series. What happens is almost a do over, starting with the next year and you see a huge discontinuity in the data when the Census has been incorporated into the non-institutional population statistic. Believe me, we did not get a streaming horde of illegal aliens in one month, nor did everyone decide to give spontaneous birth. Those spikes simply represent the tacking on of population controls to reflect the latest Census.

I can't decide what is funnier- that Warmowski thinks that government 'created' these jobs he's pointing at, or that the number of jobs he thinks the government created are a good return on the $1.3 TRILLION annual deficits we're currently running.

Warmowski thinks that the entire economic collapse was caused by 'libertarianism' -you know, the libertarians who somehow did exactly what libertarians would never do:

The time is right for it: the nation faces a crisis on a scale not seen since the 1930s. Once again we face the twin specters of an economy in collapse and a world at war. Paul cuts through the ideological fog and in doing so breaks with all the conventions, the worn and now useless political labels that have misled us for so long.

The Labor Department estimated on Friday that the economy gained 243,000 jobs.

The department also estimated that the economy lost 2,689,000 jobs in the month.

The difference in the two numbers is in seasonal adjustment. Employment always falls in January, as temporary Christmas jobs end. So the government applies seasonal adjustment factors in an effort to discern the real trend of the economy apart from seasonal fluctuations. The actual survey showed the big loss in jobs. The seasonal adjustments produced the reported gain of 243,000 jobs.

A reason to doubt the number is that there has been a tendency in this cycle for the seasonal factors to overstate moves, in both directions. Labor mobility is down, as fewer workers quit to seek better jobs and employers both hire and fire fewer people than they used to do. If the seasonal adjustment was too large, then the gain should be smaller.

I'm going to try to come up with a list of all parties responsible for the housing bubble. Let me know if I left anyone out.

Commercial banks and mortgage brokers, who sold people homes they couldn't afford, often using contracts with unclear, misleading, or flat-out dishonest language, then promptly passed of the risk to . . .

Investment banks, who packaged the mortgages into bonds, sold the bonds to investors who never bothered to read the contents, and sold/held "insurance" on the bonds, huge amounts of which were held by . . .

AIG, who had no business holding that much insurance on debt. Had CDSs been less concentrated, the bailouts would have been smaller.

Ratings agencies, who also never bothered to read or understand the bonds they were rating. (Frankly, I think ratings agencies, who do a lot of good work otherwise, were among the most responsible--less responsible than commercial banks and mortgage houses, more responsible than investment banks, who couldn't have sold as many bonds without AAA ratings. Had the bonds been accurately rated, we never would have had the mess.)

The government--or rather, the lack thereof--which abdicated its responsibility to regulate complicated derivative markets and, at the state level, the housing market.

The Efficient Markets Hypothesis. Most US markets are pretty efficient, but the MBS market most certainly wasn't. The content of the MBS bonds was publicly available but most certainly not reflected in the price. I will say, however, that Gene Fama also emphasizes that there's no such thing as a low-risk, high-return investment, so there were aspects of the EMH that should have led people to scrutinize their bonds more. And in fact, some investors did just that.

The media, which glamorized the market and encouraged people to participate in it.

And finally, huge chunks of the general public. Some people were duped, but plenty were simply greedy and short-sighted, and there was certainly fraud on the part of some borrowers. The public should never be considered among the most responsible for the mess, but I totally reject the notion that they should be let off the hook or that they were pawns in someone else's game.

Freddie Mac, the taxpayer-owned mortgage giant, has placed multibillion-dollar bets that pay off if homeowners stay trapped in expensive mortgages with interest rates well above current rates.

Freddie began increasing these bets dramatically in late 2010, the same time that the company was making it harder for homeowners to get out of such high-interest mortgages.

No evidence has emerged that these decisions were coordinated. The company is a key gatekeeper for home loans but says its traders are “walled off” from the officials who have restricted homeowners from taking advantage of historically low interest rates by imposing higher fees and new rules.

Freddie’s charter calls for the company to make home loans more accessible. Its chief executive, Charles Haldeman Jr., recently told Congress that his company is “helping financially strapped families reduce their mortgage costs through refinancing their mortgages.”

But the trades, uncovered for the first time in an investigation by ProPublica and NPR, give Freddie a powerful incentive to do the opposite, highlighting a conflict of interest at the heart of the company. In addition to being an instrument of government policy dedicated to making home loans more accessible, Freddie also has giant investment portfolios and could lose substantial amounts of money if too many borrowers refinance.

“We were actually shocked they did this,” says Scott Simon, who as the head of the giant bond fund PIMCO’s mortgage-backed securities team is one of the world’s biggest mortgage bond traders. “It seemed so out of line with their mission.”

The trades “put them squarely against the homeowner,” he says.

As an atheist, I've found there's a sort of quasi-iconoclastic fashion to claim that atheists are as bad as religious fundamentalists or the like. The economy is in the tank. Americans are hurting, out of work and underemployed. The housing market hasn't recovered. And a weakened President Barack Obama hopes for good news.

So why are Democratic operatives and their media cheerleaders laughing? Because the Republican presidential candidates are so darn amusing in the slapstick of this campaign.

There's nothing like watching politicians stumbling and bumbling, tripping on all those abandoned and forgotten principles, to help you forget that it'll be your turn one day.

And as Democrats laugh at all the hilarious Republican pratfalls, can they see their own party stubbing its toes a few years from now on their own abandoned ideals, such as the civil liberties that were once so important to so many liberals?

Right now, Democrats have the White House and they aim to stay in power. And many liberals who are concerned about civil liberties are guzzling the Kool-Aid, perhaps as desperately as their conservative counterparts guzzled it when former President George W. Bush was pushing big-government conservatism with a straight face.

Now the Republicans are presenting a carny show. They've sent in the clowns.

Newt Gingrich is the one big-government Republican who can really slap down those big-government Democrats. And he offers a highly articulate, sweeping, passionate, almost lyrical conservatism. But Newt has a problem: Political Tourette Syndrome. He shouts out what America needs:

Manned colonies on the moon!

As Newt remains the stranger in his strange land, Mitt Romney sees weakness and is ascendant in Florida. But Mitt has his own problems. Let's call them "Mitt's Funds in the Grand Cayman Islands" and "Mitt's Swiss bank accounts."

If a President Gingrich puts the 51st state on the moon, then the least a President Romney could do is conquer the Cayman Islands. They're only about 480 miles from Miami, there's a lot more cash, there's some good fishing and they're a lot cheaper to occupy than the moon.

At least conservative Rick Santorum seems to believe about half of what he says, which is a marked improvement over the studied sincerity of the other two, but not enough.

And libertarian Ron Paul?

"Well, I don't think we should go to the moon. I think we maybe should send some politicians up there," Paul quipped.

Gingrich and Santorum have done their jobs as status quo blocking backs, so Paul will never get the one-on-one confrontation he needed to defeat the corporatist Romney. Still, I think Paul will have a victory, not this year, but long term. And not personally, but through his ideas.

You already see it, in the energy level of young. They're turned on by libertarian ideas, by smaller government, by less taxes, and they don't want to fight any more wars. Many young people are also quite intrigued by a strange document, one that prompts snickering among establishment big-government Democrats and big-government Republicans.

You may have heard about this weird booklet.

We call it the Constitution.

Things are already changing. Only a few weeks ago, Paul was ridiculed as an "isolationist" for not wanting America to fight wars. But recently, there has been a subtle but significant shift in establishment rhetoric.

The word "isolationist" has been replaced. The new, almost officially approved term is "noninterventionist."

That's far less pejorative. And you'll see it used more often, an acknowledgment by the elites that the young people who do most of the fighting and the dying in American wars aren't inherently evil simply because they want to live.

That youth vote once belonged to President Obama. Years ago, he was the hope and change agent from Chicago's City Hall. But that seems like eons ago, back in the days when he cared about civil liberties.

When Bush was in the White House, Democratic liberals like Obama shrieked at the loss of civil liberties. Conservatives saw it happening, saw the federal muscle being used on Americans, but they drank the Kool-Aid, convincing themselves that there was some greater good.

Now they see their party has lost its way. Back then, the Democrats were out of power. They were loud critics of Bush and anyone who'd deny Americans their rights. These days, Democrats guzzle the Kool-Aid and Obama uses civil liberties to clean his shoes.

Last month he signed the National Defense Authorization Act, which would allow the military to jail and detain Americans without charges if they're suspected of consorting with terrorists. Think of that. American armed forces arresting and jailing — without charges — fellow U.S. citizens. To keep his civil liberties cred, Obama insists it won't come to this, but a former law professor should understand that if you give the government power, it will use it.

"You go down a slippery slope," liberal Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., told The Hill last week. "To not give people a hearing, to not give an American citizen the right to have his case heard in a court — I think that's one of our basic rights. Once we're starting to get rid of our basic rights, we're in real trouble."

But with so many Democrats laughing at the Republican circus, and all those glasses of Kool-Aid being raised, who can hear him?

That's exactly right- Gingrich and Santorum are status quo blocking backs, keeping the controlled media from having to frame the race as one between Romney and Paul. If the money thrown at Gingrich's campaign by Israel-firster Sheldon Adelson doesn't prove that to you, nothing will. Those millions aren't pro-Gingrich millions- it's money to keep someone anyone alive so the media doesn't have to show America Ron Paul, the real people's choice. The ruling class of zionists and financiers threw Cain, Bachmann, Perry and even Huntsman into the foreground to keep attention off Paul and now they are stuck with the job of conning the public into taking Gingrich seriously, inventing a phony two man race to keep Paul out of the spotlight.

Only absolute scum could deny this unfolding plot, but sellout liberal assholes universally dispute the charge that Ron Paul is purposely ignored by the media. How could they possibly agree with that? They are an extension of the controlled media they deny exists. Once you deny that the media is controlled and deny by whom, you are forever locked into an alternate reality of lies and treason.

What an idiot. Paying attention to religion isn't endorsement of religion. If the media failed to cover religion's role in society, crazy paranoid atheists would be screaming the opposite: "The media is ignoring religion! It's a cover up."

Face it, most people are religious and that means that religion influences what they do. The media can hardly help referencing it. ( Of course, that doesn't mean that the media doesn't give the atheists the 'religion-free' news coverage they want on occasion- like reporting on the crazed predatory parasitical financial crime syndicate- in that case, connections between the behavior of sociopaths and religion is carefully censored out. On a per capita basis, atheists are probably more insufferable and more bigoted than the average religious person, because they're convinced that the whole world is out to get them so they never stop whining about it.

Look, it's real simple- you don't make college more affordable by pumping government loans into the market. Increasing the pool of money available for tuition incentivizes the colleges to raise tuition. If the government gave everyone $100 a week to spend on gasoline do you think prices at the pump would drop? Same thing for the housing market- government guarantees and government loans means more people with more money to spend in the housing market- home prices rise. Government buying toilet seats for military bases? You end up with 500 dollar toilet seats.

All this has been known forever by people who understand economics and don't lie about it- this means that globalist sellout liberals have it all backwards, because they all misunderstand economics and lie about economics. If you want the cost of anything to rise, invite government to step into the market as a buyer or a lender.

If we can have a flat tax, like Chet has suggested, but get rid of our medieval drug laws and decriminalize narcotics, let the states become more autonomous, put an end to illegal wire tapping, end the war, and reduce the budget of the military, wouldn't smaller government be a benefit in regards to individual rights?

The problems that we keep having to face, from the Iraq war, the "war" on drugs, wire tapping, spying on citizens, erosion of our rights, terrorism, agencies wasting money, awful public education, inflation, endless bureaucracy, are problems either created or exacerbated by our government, yet the answer is, more government? I don't understand this way of thinking. We can argue about this until the 2012 election, but when these problems get bigger at the hands of another Bush, or an Obama, tell me how you'll feel. Changing the head of the government still leaves it's old body behind. The only thing this latest crop of candidates can offer is bread and circuses.

Presenting an individual or a business as 'in need of charity' when they weren't is shady, and in retrospect, how else to interpret that whole circus, but as a way to, put simply, give Steve Albini over a quarter of a million dollars??

Hey,

That was fun.

I am ending the campaign.

I was waiting for 24hrs without multiple pledges. We just hit it.

This was not a prank, exactly. I will cop to it being "prankish."

Was that a cunt move? To cycle from language that is very much in the vein of 'Electrical needs help paying its mortgage' to 'hah ha, I played a prank'?

More of a cunt move than spending money you earned on a watch you like, at least in my book.
